Established in 1991 as the first property of the Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC), Karakamia Wildlife Sanctuary is a landmark for conservation in Western Australia. This 275-hectare sanctuary is completely enclosed by a specialized feral-proof fence. This allows endangered native mammals to thrive in a predator-free environment that mimics the Australian bush as it was 200 years ago.
Services offered
- Guided Night Walks: The sanctuary’s signature experience. These two-hour spotlight tours allow visitors to see rare, nocturnal mammals like Woylies and Tammar Wallabies in their natural habitat.
- Wildlife Protection & Reintroduction: A safe haven for critically endangered species, including the Woylie (Brush-tailed Bettong), Quenda, and Western Ringtail Possum.
- Habitat Restoration: Ongoing management of Jarrah forest, granite outcrops, and wetlands to support over 260 plant species.
- Educational Tours: Specialized visits for schools and universities to learn about biodiversity and feral predator control.
- Volunteering Opportunities: Programs for those looking to assist in land management and conservation research.
